But rather thin on information. I guess at that time of the century slapping a title like "English/Inuit Dictionary" just wasn't the done thing.
Great Stuff!
Again, free so I downloaded it... I have to admit it was interesting but it's definitely a read for people who aren't too busy and can really absorb the info. I hated only being able to do bits and pieces on the train.
The price was excellent. The language and its given-history was curious and interesting. I doubt that I will ever use what is in the book for more than being able to say that I am aware. Being more aware, and the price, made it a pleasant reading experience.
Hmm, I wish there was a lot more to this dictionary. There are mostly only the most common words used and a person could read the whole thing in less than 5 minutes. It will help in a pinch to get the most basic conversation across but you will be pretty much on your own for anything more than that.
The Alaska dictionary is a compact. well organized book. It gives English common words that might be needed to understand the Aleutian Indians and neighbors of the Alaskan peninsula. This language has never been written down. The author has lived with and is thoroughly familiar with these people and believes this will be a big help to anyone traveling or trading in this area.
Good look at Northwestern tribal and coastal culture and language. The author has provided some descriptions on the etymology and traditional use of these words this little book illuminates much of what you've heard about native culture in Alaska.
