Anne Henry Dawn Ius Books
Anne & Henry was my most anticipated book of 2015. The first thing that attracted me was the intriguing, gorgeous cover. Secondly, the story of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII told as young adult fiction. I wondered how the author could turn such a tumultuous, tragic romance between the book's two real-life counterparts into a young adult story. Dawn Ius delivered. The story, told from the alternating perspectives of Anne and Henry mirrored the historical version in all the right places, but carried it to a contemporary setting with contemporary issues. While Ms. Ius' version riveted me from the opening page, what most impressed me was how she dealt with the characters' emotions of meeting, falling in love, being conspired against, being betrayed. I could easily imagine how the real Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII must have felt having the literal world against their union. That's something the history books, or even series and movies never delivered as potently as Dawn Ius did. Ms. Ius modernized the romance by tossing in a few mean girls, jealous friends, manipulation, and societal expectations. Anne & Henry certainly lived up to my expectations, and I hope Ms. Ius is planning another story or two based on legendary lovers. Anne & Henry made me "Most Happy."Tags : Amazon.com: Anne & Henry (9781481439411): Dawn Ius: Books,Dawn Ius,Anne & Henry,Simon Pulse,1481439413,Family - Parents,Romance - Contemporary,Social Themes - General,Dating (Social customs),Dating (Social customs);Fiction.,High schools,High schools;Fiction.,Love,Love stories,Love;Fiction.,Schools,Anne Boleyn; Henry VIII; King Henry; King Henry VIII: reimaginings; fairy tales; fairytales; alternative history; alt history; The Other Boleyn Girl; forbidden love; forbidden romance; historical romance; historical retelling; retelling; retellings; reimagining; royalty; books about royalty; books about kings,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),JUVENILE FICTION Love & Romance,Juvenile FictionSocial Themes - Dating & Relationships,Love & Romance,Modern & contemporary fiction (post c 1945),Social Themes - Dating & Relationships,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Family General (see also headings under Social Themes),YOUNG ADULT FICTION Family Parents,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance Contemporary,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Royalty,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes Dating & Sex,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes General (see also headings under Family),Young Adult Fiction,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes General (see also headings under Family),Young Adult Fiction,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Modern & contemporary fiction (post c 1945)
Anne Henry Dawn Ius Books Reviews
Things you need to know right off the bat
1) This books is extremely addicting. I read it in one sitting and couldn’t be bothered to stop for basic human functions such as eating, using the bathroom, or breathing (during certain scenes).
2) This story stays true to the essence of the real Anne Boleyn and Henry Tudor, but it is NOT a strict retelling. EXPECT CHANGES. And be openminded and allow yourself to get lost in the story.
What I love most about this book is how intimate it is. Not in the sense of romance (though there is that—and some steaminess too!), but in how deep and how quickly we get immersed into Anne and Henry’s psyche. From the opening lines of the book, you’re drawn into the complicated mind of Henry, who is struggling to juggle family and community expectations while trying not to lose himself in the process. And then he meets Anne and—if you’re familiar with Tudor history at all—we all know what happens next. Anne is full of fire, but also a strong need to be loved and accepted by the new people in her life. Until it’s clear they aren’t playing nice, and then she doesn’t hesitate to take a stand against them.
Henry falls hard and fast—a young guy ruled by his passions, just like his real-life counterpart. He lets his new infatuation consume him, almost to his very destruction… or at least, the destruction of the Henry his mother and close friends THINK he should be. None of his choices are easy, and you get to see the internal struggle between what he wants and what is expected of him.
Anne should’ve known better. She’s had issues with guys in the past, so she’s hesitant to get caught up with Henry, whose mother and friends are almost violent in their distain for her, but whose smile and kind nature are hard to resist. She fights an uphill battle the entire way, taking the hard way with each turn… until the very end.
The writing is compelling and incredibly delectable. Once you take your first bite, you’re going to have a hard time not devouring the whole cake. But then why not indulge? A quick, absorbing read that’ll leave you tears—but whether they’re happy, angry, or sad will depend on whose side of the story you’re on.
A really incredible debut by a fantastic writer. Can’t wait to see what Ius comes out with next!
I've finally finished it!! I've been waiting for months to read this book and it didn't disappoint. I'm looking forward to book two.
Author seemed to have no knowledge of the actual history of Henry viii or Anne boleyn. Even the fictional modern version made no sense. I would not recommend this.
If I could give this 10 stars I would. I love Dawn Ius's writing style. I adore the cover with it's pop art styling. Anne & Henry is a 'Historic' high school twist on Henry the VIII and Anne Boleyn doomed romance like you've never read before. It's fun, flirty, a little bit of rock & roll...their relationship heats up the pages and takes you for a high octane ride. Cannot wait until you can read what I've read. You will devour this novel. Ms. Ius's writing style really yanks you into the world and holds you there. She even made Henry VIII (The king who had 8 wives, some he beheaded...yah, that wanker.) a likable and charming hero. In the beginning, you really root for him and want him to have his obsession...Anne. Ius crafted his character with twists, drawing cleverly into his emotional arc that casts him as the spoiled, entitled, a$$hat and total believable character you love to hate. Anne was the star of this book. Ius wrote her bold, beautiful, and strong, yet trouble by her past and social standing. The reader really feels for Anne and her fate. I won't spoil the ending. It was great tongue and cheek play on the actual historical event. This isn't a play by play on the Tudors TV series with Jonathan Rhys Meyers. It's so much more. It's fun, it's edgy, it's sexy. Ius weaves history into a modern day yarn and unravels everything you thought you knew about high school love. Two major thumbs up this is going on my keeper shelf.
This book was so clever and amazing! Everyone knows the story of Henry the 8th and Anne Boleyn and it's sad and horrible, but this made the story so much worse! I found myself hoping that Henry and Anne would work it out. That Henry would stand up to his friends and choose Anne and they live happily ever after, however that is not what happened.
I think the story became a lot more real because of how it could happen in this day and age. It was almost too easy for Henry's "friends" to paint Anne in a negative light and it broke my heart reading about it.
Dawn not only recreated a tragic story but she made it so much more gut wrenching and horrible (in a very good couldn't put it down way). This book was so good I read it in one day!
I especially love the way she worked in Jane Seymour and the beheading aspect of Anne's death with the picture. A great book that all lovers of Anne Boleyn and Henry the 8th should read!
