The only disappointment with this book is that the conversations are not longer and that Helen Handler, the subject of The Risk of Sorrow, passed away recently (early 2016). The horrors of the Holocaust are of course recounted, but also the awful loneliness and disconnection Helen experienced throughout her life even though she married and had a son. Yet Helen persevered and became a businesswoman and a beautiful speaker and felt her purpose in life was to talk to students so future generations would never forget. Also evident in the book is the powerful bond and friendship created between author and teacher Valerie Foster. Through their conversations, Foster questions her loss of faith, her political opinions, and they grieve together over the loss of Valerie's mother. Foster reads and rereads many of the books suggested by Helen, including Heart of Darkness by Conrad and The Chosen by Chaim Potok. Both women are changed because Foster listens to a story that needed to be told. Every secondary student should read this book as well as every teacher candidate and every citizen. This is a heartbreaking yet hopeful memoir.Product details

A great book exploring Helen Handler's past during the Hitler regime and her experiences in the worst of the worst camps. Her relationship years later with Valerie Foster who writes the book of her life is more than writing a book, it is an exploration of the psyche, the deep wounds left within and her struggle to freedom from these wounds. I would recommend this book to everyone to read, I feel that it is a lesson especially in these days to not forget that anyone can take over a country, especially when no one is paying attention and the ravages left behind from such horrible acts to mankind.
Ms. Foster has succeeded in capturing not only the events of this survivor's pre and post war experience, but her innermost fears, thoughts, analysis, and belief system before and after the war. And, in addition, the author has shared her own reactions, learnings, understandings, beliefs, and interactions with Helen. A unique addition to Holocaust post-war literature.
A must read for anyone who needs to be reminded that life can continue even after great tragedy. Author Valerie Foster shares her compelling conversations with her friend Helen Handler who requested Valerie write her story. The reader feels as if they are sharing a cup of coffee with the two women as they discuss Helen’s memories of joy, terror, determination, and hope. They talk about love, loss, and faith as well as the power of friendship in healing.
Outstanding book. It is very important that the first hand accounts of survivor's of the Nazi atrocities against mankind are recorded to remind the world how evil will cause total devastation if the world does not get involved to stop it. This is why it is every persons responsibility to stop evil like the rise of Hitler in the 1930's and 40's and ISIS today. Ms. Handler's story tells us how living under such evil impacts a life forever.
I was very intrigued with the Holocaust from a very early age and it was one of my goals to visit one of the concentration camps during my lifetime. While I was stationed in Germany - I did make 3 trips to Dachau during that time, and it was very somber and sobering experience to be able to do so.
When Val told me about Helen and that she was asked to write her story - I was very excited and thought what a real honor that would be for her to do this for this particular Survivor!
Generally, I would have preferred to read more details of the experiences in the camp - but the way Val presented Helen's life in the book was perfect! She addressed Helen's whole life and didn't limit herself to the year + she spent in the Camp, because the time in the Camp was not living at all - it was coping with a horrific situation. And throughout her life she continus to cope with the repercussions of what went on during that time.
Thank God for ToastMasters and Helen's will to tell her story! And Thank You Val - for enduring, and reliving her story and putting it all into words!
I have known Mrs. Foster (Valerie, the author) for years and have always known she had a way with words. She has outdone herself with this book. I told her that while reading it, I experienced every emotion known to myself. At times I had to put the book down and walk away, other times I was angry, I cried, I laughed. Helen Handler (the survivor) is someone I would be proud to call a friend. Her story will amaze you. I have not read of any other Holocaust survivor stories, and this has now made me want to know more. The amazing strength this child/woman had will make you feel like you need to reach out and hug her. I don't care if you are Jewish or any other religion, this book will touch your soul and very being. I read it slowly and read every single word - it was that important to me to not miss any part of this historical story. Buy the book - give it to many friends - let Helen's story be told. You won't be sorry. Bravo to both Valerie and Helen to have the courage to tell the world what many of us don't know.
The author has written a wonderful book about a marvelous person. When Helen Handler says that she didn't hate her guards in Auschwitz, it seemed incomprehensible to me. But after reading her rationale, it made sense.
Helen Handler's superhuman will to live enabled her to endure unspeakable conditions and cruelty in the concentration camp. But she has drawn on those experiences to reject hatred and become an eloquent spokesperson for tolerance. I admire her greatly.
