Rating: 4.5 StarsSo we all know Richelle Mead is an auto-buy author for me because I LOVED Vampire Academy series, Rose & Dimitri forever, and I enjoyed the spin-off Bloodlines. For her adult books I enjoyed the Dark Swan series and finally got all of these on my shelf at a good price waiting for me to dive into them. My hold up I think was more that when I first got them I had just finished a Lost Girl marathon and didn’t want to read them on top of that. Lost Girl is focused on a succubus if you didn’t know. So then at the start of 2017 I decided it was time to start this series and I had the audiobook for Succubus Blues and figured it was a great time to start. It had also been long enough since I heard about these books the only thing I knew about the book/series was that it focused on Georgina Kincaid a succubus. That’s it.
Going in blind was all kinds of fun I admit. We follow Georgina, a succubus who isn’t in love with the job. She can have anything or any man she wants but the problem is the men usually end up paying for it with their soul. Kind of puts a damper on real romance. Her day job is at a local bookstore which feeds her love of books and coffee, so from the start I loved her. Her night job is more about feeding her needs and working for the demon underground. When her day job puts her in close proximity to her favorite author, Seth Mortensen, who happens to be sexy as hell things get interesting.
I really enjoyed the story. I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed how quick it seemed to go by. I think it took only a couple nights listening for a bit before bed and I was finished. I know it’s the start of 2018 and I’m talking about a book I listened to at the start of the previous year, why the delay. Well the downside is that I enjoyed listening to the story so much and hearing Georgina’s quippy one-liners and such that I think I want to listen to the rest of the series. So it took the year to convince myself I just had to splurge on them, waiting for a sale was taking too long. I thought it had been too long to post but I realized as I started book two that I was instantly back into this world and I did a quick skim of book one I plan to finish this series in 2018. I am really enjoying this dynamic between Georgina and Seth and the balance between who she is as a person vs. what she has to do to stay alive. The balance between being a good person when your job is to corrupt men’s souls to hell. But the characters were all fun to read and it was a fresh take that was quick and entertaining. There is action, humor, sexy times (duh she’s a succubus), character development, and a real story at play. I am really enjoying this series by Mead, though I’m not surprised as she is an auto-buy author for me. I’ll share my thoughts on this series as I go.

I read a sample of "Succubus Blues" then went out on a limb and bought it, knowing Richelle Mead to be a talented writer from her Vampire Academy series. Thankfully, I was not disappointed! The character development was great and the beginnings of an overarching series plot made me get the second book as soon as I finished! The one thing I'm still trying to figure out is how "good" people can be demons. I understand that they owe a service for whatever favor a demon gave them but it seems slightly unrealistic that Georgina's friends/peers wouldn't resist their roles the way she does. Anyway, I've been vague, but if you're in debate about trying this book, read a sample! If you're still in debate, take a chance! Richelle Mead is a fantastic writer and even if you only read the first book in this series, you'll be entertained and probably laugh out loud a few times.
This is a fun take on Urban Fantasy. I had originally only purchased the first 3 books and finally caught a sale to complete my collection, so I'm re-reading the first books as it's been several years since I first read them.
Our main character is Georgina, a several thousand year old succubus who is pretty disenchanted with her role as a succubus and has been scraping by doing as little as a succubus as possible. She's currently assigned to Seattle and works in a bookshop as a day job. Early on in the book we meet Georgina's favorite author, Seth, who comes to the bookshop for a signing event. Seth sticks around as one of the main characters as well.
Georgina, as a succubus, is a minion of the dark side and is buddies with a couple of vampires and an imp. Her boss is a demon that hangs out with an angel.
The tone is mostly light and humorous, though the characters are developed and have good back stories that give them some pathos despite the comedy.
Since the story centers on a succubus, you should not be surprised to find there are a couple of love interests in the story though the author does at least avoid a complete love triangle trope.
This is not a super action-packed Urban Fantasy, since succubi are more prone to be lovers than fighters. Speaking of which, for a book centering on a succubus, there are not a huge amount of love scenes, though there are a few (one explicit one I can think of).
There is a bit of a mystery to this first book in the series. I will say I like that the author didn't make the mystery's solution too painfully obvious (at least not compared to some other books I've read). At least the bad guy didn't come in twirling his mustache!
I'm looking forward to finishing the series now that I have all the volumes!
