Oh my goodness. initially they said the book was due out on Sept 17th but imagine my surprise when I purchased it on the 16th. Ms Monroe you out did yourself with this book. Charles is something else. He says what he means and means what he says. I love Jenay. She is tender yet strong. I do hope you explore why she wasn't able to get pregnant while she was with her first husband. I believe he had a vasectomy and did not tell her. I hope in the next book he finds out just how well she is doing. I am glad Charles let Donnie spend time in jail and I was glad that the baby was not Donnie's baby. Charles reminds me so much of Reno. I give this book 10 stars. I read it in one night. Can't wait for the next installment.

Big Daddy Sinatra There Was a Ruthless Man The Sinatras of Jericho County Series Book 1 edition by Mallory Monroe Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

“That’s a conclusion, tell me what she did” My favorite line from Book 1. I had fallen behind in my reading due to the birth of my 3rd child about a year ago, and I am slowly coming out of my new mommy haze. To my surprise Mallory had started a new series with the Sinatras. Lucky for me I was having a lull at work and I brought the 1st installment to start on my lunch break. Well there went the rest of my afternoon. In short order I finished book 1 that same day and have since purchased and finshed books 2 and 3. Yes finished each book in a day, needless to say I am now behind at work but it was worth it!!
Seductive, action packed, lustful, hypnotic I mean I cannot think of enough words to describe Charles Sinatra. A long time Mallory Monroe fan, I thought no one could replace Reno in my eyes but Charles is giving Reno a run for his money in my eyes. I loved Jenay’s strength, her development as a character, and eventually Charles’ wife. I was easily addicted to Charles’ temperament, the way he handled his business in and out of the bedroom and his unflinching, unrepentant love for Jenay. Charles became a new man. I loved the sons storyline as well, they are a mixed up bunch but what family isn’t and I love that Charles is showed as a loving devoted family man. I am elated and very well pleased with this series. I have a lot of catching up to do. Cannot wait for book 4.
Words are really hard to explain how wonderful this story is. Charles "Big Daddy Sinatra", is a man unlike any other man. He is loyal, faithful, loving, compassionate, and has a heart of gold. Jericho's residents may think he is ruthless and heartless, but Jenay is a strong, independent woman who loves and respects her man. They have no secrets from each other, they do not play games, and this makes them a match made in heaven. Charles is a man that most women would want, he's definitely my kind of man. Charles is a no nonsense man, who happens to own most of the businesses in Jericho, and most of them think he is evil but Charles is a business man who loves his family. To Charles family comes before anything else. Charles faces down on a daily basis different problems, but when Jenay enters his life, the love is undeniable between them. Jenay is a divorced woman who lost everything that matters, when she meets Charles a chance at love and happiness becomes a possibility. This story will make you laugh and cry; because the emotions are very intense. I love this story and will be keeping up on all of the Sinatras stories. Well done!
Big Daddy Sinatra There Was a Ruthless Man (The Sinatras of Jericho County Book #1) is my first book read by author Mallory Monroe. This is a well-written story about to very unlikely people coming together against all the odd stacked against them. First we meet Jenay Franklin, who get the shock of her life from her then husband Quince Franklin. That he is divorcing her and moving on with much richer prospect. Some years later Jenay meets Charles Sinatra at a wedding (he's the father of the groom and she is interning). For Charles it is interest at first sight, he feels something for Jenay that he has never felt before. Later that night after her accident he takes her home and the sparks fly and they are burning up the sheets. After Charles, leaves to go back to Jericho he cannot get Jenay off of his mind; however, Charles has his hands full of not just his business interest, his sons, but the women of Jericho that he has taken to his bed in the past. Will Charles and Jenay beat the odds that are against them or will the storm over take them. Find out by reading Big Daddy Sinatra There Was a Ruthless Man (The Sinatras of Jericho County Book #1).

Big Daddy Sinatra2 If I Can't Have You (The Sinatras of Jericho County Book) is next on my list to read.
Wow! I absolutely loved this book. Mallory Monroe brought her A game with this one. I started reading and couldn't stop until the very end. How about I still wanted more! Ms. Monroe drew me in with her descriptive words and wonderful characters. There was heartache, sex (which wasn't too over the top that it took over the book), romance, and drama. The book length was absolutely perfect. I still have to say it, I enjoy a series that has books with length and substance. The only thing I found wrong in this book was the timeline. It started off in 1998, then 3 years, then seven weeks later Charles was in his office speaking to Joe Mason about his foreclosure and Obamacare. This time frame was about 2001. Obama was elected in 2008. It's a small thing but noticeable to me.

The two main characters Jenay and Charles were awesome. Big Daddy Charles Sinatra didn't take crap from anyone and I loved it. He admitted when he was wrong but didn't back down when he was right. He handled his sons with love and hardcore toughness. The town of Jericho obviously haven't figured him out yet. Oh boy did he stand up for Jenay in every way. He just needed Jenay to make him relevant and she did that. Jenay wasn't a cry baby or a weak woman. Ha she held her own with the best of them. I believed they balanced each other out. Charles was the love Janey needed in life. Give me Charles Sinatra any day. Great job Mallory Monroe. Can't wait for the next book!! Get this book you'll love it!)
Charles Bukowski was a unique voice in literature with cross-overs from everything from Beats to Punk of Parisian avant garde. Sounes seems to know the writer and have researched; however, I am appalled at the lack of support for his work. This is not a finely tuned biography with sources sited. He alludes to where the words of the poems or books developed but does not give adequate academic citation. Despite his affinity for Bukowski, the reader has no way of knowing whether or not conversations are legitimate--whether taken from interviews or merely recreated from conversation.
Also, Bukowski alcohol, sex, drug life makes him the kind of character that projects to the reader (as with Montgomery Clift and other trouble artists), how much longer can he last--or better yet how much more can I bear to read of this personal destruction.

If I were looking for serious information about the author, this is a reference that I would not consider substantially academic as to be helpful.

Charles Bukowski Locked in the Arms of a Crazy Life Howard Sounes 9780802136978 Books Reviews

Sounes writes well. A nice background to an interesting life story.
This isn't the best volume of Bukowski that I've ever read, but it isn't the worst either. I think that means something because I've read most of what he published during his lifetime- I used to look forward to the next book of poems, the next novel, year by year. The posthumous collections have been worthwhile in my opinion. This is all stuff that fits the flow of his life narrative. He needed to get it out; it isn't just filler and rejects. There are enough reminiscences about the old days to hold your interest if that was your favorite period of his life (though he makes it clear that to go out and try to live that way when you've got other options is insane.) Buk didn't have a choice and he points out that he was the luckiest man alive to have survived it.

As for this being "mellow" Bukowski, yes, I think he even uses that term in one of the poems. Plus he clearly let his hatred of his father go. However, he also states that he has never really had any peace in his life. Sure, his cancer took some of the fight out of him, but he never surrendered. He says in one poem that you have to "accept terrible reality", but that doesn't mean he ever surrendered to terrible reality.
We who read Charles Bukowski know the persona he projected through his work. Some focus on his drunken exploits. Some focus on his integrity. Some focus on his indominability in the face of rejection and defeat. Some focus on his marvelous and sad interactions with women. All that is found in this biography, as well as the contrast between his written persona and his lived character. Your view of him will be changed, though (for me at least) not diminished.
As a bonus there are a number of photos tucked away in spots - maddeningly unmarked in the edition - that show him and the people he was close to throughout his life.
I own every Black Sparrow and ECCO book Charles Bukowski wrote, as well as several other older books put out by other publishers (also the City Lights books). I think that several of the books published posthumously lack in some ways, but The Flash of Lightning Behind the Mountain is, I feel, his best posthumous book, and maybe one of his best books overall. The poetry is a little more mellow here, but that's understandable considering the place he was in at this point in his life. Some of the themes Buk tackles in this book are his drinking (of course), his childhood (as always), going to the track (naturally), visiting the hospital for his leukemia, his "evil" father, as well as relaxing and growing old with Linda, his wife. I think John Martin did a great job of editing this collection, and I'll never tire of reading it. I think hard core fans will enjoy it as much as newbies. Recommended.
I first discovered the work of Charles Bukowski approximately five years ago, and I was immediately impressed. The more I read the more I enjoyed. I had heard all the legendary tales, the horror stories and the millions of tales of drunken mania, but I purposely stayed away from reading anything ABOUT the man. I didn't want to be disappointed when the reality is often times a far cry from the truth.
Eventually I broke down and bought this book, simply because the countless stories of his life were really becoming too much, and I wanted to know a little more about the man. If at all possible, from an independent observer who was not a Bukowski crony. I think this book accomplishes the task of being a reasonably detached look at the life of a complicated individual, with a few complaints.
First, the author obviously fell in love with Bukowski during this book (or perhaps before he even wrote it), and it shows constantly. There are admitted mistakes in his life, but the real warts are brushed over rather quickly.
Second, the book felt rushed. I think the book would have been much better if the author took his time and wrote a comprehensive 500-700 page book, which he obviously could have done. There are more than enough things to write about. Whole accounts of his womanizing and his time with the LA Free Press are just glanced over. I think it cheated the reader
Lastly, the author quickly passes over the interpersonal relationships Bukowski formed and spoke almost exclusively of events. Events don't tell us the whole story, and what he did write about the relationships was shallow at best. Linda King was the only one who had any depth added. The lack of interpersonal discussions really failed to bring out the third dimension in this book, and it fell a little flat.
The good thing for the author is that he writes well, and thankfully, Charles Bukowski is an interesting subject. I find it hard to believe anyone could really make his life boring. So the book is worth reading, especially if you are like me and don't know much about the man, but if you do I think the reader might find this a bit overly simplistic.
If I could have I would have rated this a 3.5 star book. Because I like Bukowski's work, I will round up. I am huge fan of biographies and this just isn't one of the better ones.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Christopher Golden 9781840235869 Books

Thanks to a fanatically loyal audience and the supernatural nature of the source material, the Buffy franchise has been squeezed and molded into all kinds of related products and merchandise. Toys, video games, soundtracks... you name it, Buffy's face is probably on it. While I'm not normally a fan of relentless franchise-milking, the world o' Buffy lends itself quite well to the table-top RPG format. Thankfully, the developers didn't drop the ball, and they've managed to create an interesting game system that captures much of the television show's charms, from the vampire face-kicking to the offbeat humor. The game lacks a lot of the 'hard numbers' stuff that many hardcore types prefer, and I doubt it will have much pull for anyone that isn't a devotee of the show. But for Buffy fans and anyone hunting for a quirky RPG that isn't a typical dice-fest, this would be a fine choice.

What I liked best about the Buffy RPG is how it shines a spotlight on my favorite character type: the average Joe/Jane. While many will be keen on role-playing as a Slayer, said Slayer will have a supporting team (just like Buffy) that helps her fight the forces of darkness. With that in mind, you can be a Xander-type who has no special powers and astonishingly mediocre fighting prowess, yet you can still contribute in your own way. The game uses a cute gimmick called Drama Points which allow characters to pull off feats beyond their normal capabilities. There's a special satisfaction in having your loyal little sidekick survive (and even thrive) in near-death situations, as opposed to being a monstrous sword-waving barbarian that kicks down doors and beheads every beast in sight without breaking a sweat. You can be a supporting character with special powers, of course, like a witch or a Watcher. You don't even have to have a Slayer, if you don't feel like it. But the game works best if you emulate the Scooby Gang model, and most gaming groups probably will. A good Director (the person running the game) will create situations where the non-Slayers can use their unique talents or quirks to solve dilemmas that supernatural strength alone can't handle. (Don't leave the Slayer hanging, though... toss in a demon or two that needs a good beating.) Needless to say, so-called munchkins who gauge their RPG enjoyment on how 'powerful' their guy is will not be overly fond of the game, unless they always get to be the Slayer.

Another of the game's strengths is the character creation method, with the excellent Quality/Drawback system. Qualities are positive traits or powers that you 'buy' with points, and Drawbacks are negative traits that you take on to give yourself more points to buy Qualities or statistic points with. Qualities/Drawbacks run the gamut, from physical prowess to glaring personality defects. Some of these are very well thought-out; for example, the Honor trait is considered a Drawback, because it can hamstring your character in certain situations. (For instance, Buffy would never take a pile of money if it came from a nefarious source, even though she'd theoretically use the money towards noble ends.) What makes this system so appealing is that it really helps the players define their characters right off the bat. Many role-players (especially rookies) have a lot of trouble coming up with interesting personalities for their new creations, and end up being 'some fighter guy.' The Quality/Drawback system will alleviate a lot of this, as players will find all kinds of interesting quirks to choose from, and will inevitably take on some entertaining Drawbacks to pay for a Quality they really want. Some players might even take on some Drawbacks for fun (lechery or greed, for example), which will make the game more enjoyable for everybody. Good stuff.

If the game has a weakness, it lies in the somewhat vague presentation of the overall rules. Many sections of the gameplay dynamics seem to boil down to 'the Director's discretion,' which adds a lot of flexibility, but puts a lot of weight on the Director to come up with reasonable rules decisions on the fly. Characters can have a lot of basic skills like driving or computer use, but by the end of that section, the manual basically shrugs and throws in a 'wild card' category that includes anything and everything. And adjucating Drama Points can be quite tricky. If these are supposed to create minor miracles, what are the limitations? The book does a pretty good job of outlining the power of the Drama Point, but players will inevitably come up with new possible uses that seem perfectly reasonable. Unless you want the game to come to a screeching halt during a major combat, the Director will need to have to make a serious yes-or-no decision pretty quickly. A Dungeon Master in Dungeons and Dragons has dozens of tables, charts, and piles of numbers which answer almost any question that arises with simple, hard data. "You're a Level 8 wizard suffering from a poisonous snake bite? Here's the number you need to roll to survive." A Buffy game Director doesn't have the same luxury. A good mantra is "it's just a game. Do whatever makes things more fun, as long as reasonable game balance is preserved." Even with that in mind, the Director should be someone with considerable RPG-running experience.

The overall presentation of the book is excellent. The production values are high, tons of memorable Buffy quotes are sprinkled throughout, and you get character sheets for every major character from the show's seven-year run. Buffy fans will enjoy thumbing through the book even if they never intend to play the game. Of course, many chapters (monster types, spells, etc.) seem underfed... so the developers can sell you supplement books, of course. This is par for the course in table-top gaming and I'm not going to whine about it, but if you plan on getting serious about the game, it will involve a fair amount of money.

When all is said and done, this is an easy product to rate. If you and your friends really enjoy the Buffyverse and role-playing, this is an easy thumbs-up. If you prefer combat-intensive games with a lot of dice-rolling and 37 kinds of swords, you'll probably be underwhelmed. Having a group of easy-going, creative people would help a lot as well. Nice work from C.J. Carella and company.
I'm extremely excited about this book after talking to the Eden Studios guys at Gen Con about it. I proudly own the orginal run thru of the Core Book. I'm buying the Revisied book out of share fandom. Because its going to have the updated Charecter sheets for the main cast plus other updates thats happen to the storyline up thru Season 7. A nice way to give the book itself some closure. Cause it really didn't happen with the others.

Plus the real excitement for this book is, it brings along the expansion I and ever other die hard Buffy RPG fan have been waiting for, for a year!

~Sonja~
I am very excited to begin playing this game. The book is easy to understand and very helpful, but at the same time challenging and exciting.
Its a very nice system with a very good enviroment. Almost all of the series are there. Its Worth every penny.
Great product fast shipping.
overall, I thought this was a great book. the play system seems enjoyable and straight forward. the quotes from the show were hilarious. my only complaint is that I wish they had put in a few more spells for the magic section. I know the magic box has those but just a few more would have been ok. can't wait to play this game with friends.
A great little game system that does a phenomenal job capturing the spirit of the show. The rules are appropriately simple, and the action remains fast-paced without overpowering the possibility for real role-playing. The inclusion of drama points makes things interesting and helps the game to reach those heights of epic heroism that we've seen from the show. Ultimately it still falls to the GM to make things truly memorable, but this system allows you to do that.

The book itself is worth the price. Fantastic photos and snarky writing definitely captures the attitude of the series, and there's everything you need in one book (save a few D10s) to start playing right out of the gate.

What I liked best about the Buffy RPG is how it shines a spotlight on my favorite character type the average Joe/Jane. My father is a huge Firefly fan so I bought him this beautiful leather-bound book with behind-the-scenes photographs, details, and scripts. He was absolutely ecstatic about receiving this and I would highly recommend it to anyone who's a Firefly fan or needs a gift for one. The binding is absolutely stunning and so are the full-color glossy photographs. Cannot praise this purchase enough.

Firefly A Celebration Anniversary Edition Joss Whedon 8601200699012 Books Reviews

This book is a must have for anyone who considers themselves a serious Firefly fan.

It's bound in a sort of brown leatherette. It looks like the Browncoat Bible! This book is a re-working of 3 books; Firefly The Official Companion (volumes 1 and 2), and Firefly Still Flying, plus additional material. But having them altogether like this is really special. It's over 500 heavy pages of script, production photos, incredible promotional photos, archival quality images and closeups of props and costumes, development sketches, interviews and quotes from Joss, all of the actors, and many of the production team. And as a bonus in the back pocket a collection of fantastic photos of the stars and even a replica of the Chinese currency as used in the show.

These people really put a lot of thought, time, and dare I say love into creating this book. I am a huge fan of science fiction, as well as film making, conceptual art, prop creation, etc. My favorite coffee table books from my personal collection include From Star Wars to Indiana Jones The Best of the Lucasfilm Archive, the Art of Star Trek, the 3 Art of Star Wars books, The Art of The Matrix, the Battlestar Galactica Creating the Legend prop auction catalog by Propworx, and Star Wars the Magic of Myth. This new Firefly Celebration ranks right up near the top of the list for me.

This book is beautiful!
This is a book with a very specific audience and designed so that audience would surely love it. In other words, if you're one of the so-called Browncoats, this book is for you (assuming you don't already have the three companion books already since this is somewhat of a repackaging of those three).

The book is done in beautiful brown faux leather and definitely brings to mind one of those great, old world books with the gold embossing, so it's a book you won't be embarrassed to see this on your coffee table, even by your snobbiest of friends. The back of the book is packaged with some exclusive photos and a reproduction of a bank note. The bank note feels cheap yet somewhat like real money, which is odd but kind of makes it my favourite item. The "exclusive" photos have the feel of standard publicity headshots - nothing wrong with these (rather like them, myself) but there's nothing special about them either.

The content is a collection of scripts (where the title of this review was pulled), production content such as costume sketches, interview snippets, various photos, and other bits of interest, all done in glossy paper. It's the sort of thing that, as mentioned, appeals to a very specific target audience, and I can't imagine a Browncoat being unhappy with the amount of depth this adds to a very short-lived show.

Overall, I have nothing bad to say about this except that can't seem to keep it in stock (my order was almost cancelled before a new shipment came in and the book is now out of stock again). If you don't have the other Firefly companion books, then don't hesitate to get this. If you have the other companion books, the few extra bits aren't worth the cost of the book, and I would not recommend getting this book.
This book is one long love letter to a series that has changed people's lives so much over the past ten years that it has gone beyond a simple fandom and become in many cases, a philosophy, a way of life. Despite lasting only thirteen episodes and one movie, the name Firefly has become synonymous with beautiful things struck down before their time, with an enduring love, and most of all, with a want to live life simply, unfettered by unjust authority.
The book itself is amazing to see. With it's look-a-like leather binding, its large, glossy, full color pages, it looks and feels more like an encyclopedia than a book dedicated to a TV show ten years gone. The physical beauty however is far out-shined by the content contained within. I had never previously seen the three books that have been collected into this one volume, and I have to say, all the information within them is amazing. Having all of the episodes scripts is amazing, made even better by the little side bars in each detailing little know facts about a certain character or scene. They truly make you want to watch all the episodes while following along in the scripts, and seeing if you can spot this or that. The list goes on and on, from closeups of all the shows weapons, props and costumes, to interviews with the cast, and discussions of the inspiration behind certain episodes or scenes, this is now the de facto Browncoat bible.
This book is an amazing addition to any Browncoat collection, be them a hardcore collector, or someone new to the 'Verse who's never flown on a Firefly before. This book is proof that we have done the impossible, and continue to do so, even almost a decade after the airwaves have forgotten Serenity and her crew, and the pitter pater of tiny feet in huge combat boots has since faded into the black; After all, you can never stop the signal.

His Haunted Heart edition by Lila Felix Crystal Bryant Literature Fiction eBooks

-- SPOILER ALERT!!! --

“His Haunted Heart,” a story of two people who fall in love after they marry, after getting to know each other is one I loved as it was truly beautiful. You can’t help but fall in love with both Porter and Delilah. They brought the best out in each other. Porter was so terrific looking past Delilah’s scar, finding her to be beautiful inside and out. A true hero as he saves Delilah from her evil and twisted family, and gives her a new life that is nothing like the one she’s lived. It’s here where Delilah learns and comes to realize that she does matter and that love is possible and there for her taking. It bears mentioning that I was so moved when Porter’s mother, Eliza, made her feel so welcome and loved, taking her under her wing, treating her with respect and kindness, like her own daughter, all of which Delilah never had or received from her own mother.

- Porter’s POV, conversation with Delilah and his mother, Eliza

Eliza: ““I was talking to June this morning about finally moving to the mother-in-law house.” I nodded in agreement. That was the original deal.

Delilah spoke up. “Do you have to?”

“Well, I don’t have to, but it’s the usual protocol. I stayed for a bit to make sure you were eating and taken care of. I knew Porter would be gone soon after your wedding. But I think it’s time to go.” There was a sadness I hadn’t taken the time to consider in my mother’s eyes.

“If it’s okay, I’d like you to stay here.” Even Delilah looked shocked to hear her claim.

“Are you sure? Porter?” I didn’t say anything right away, so Delilah defended her claim. “Porter, when you are out of town, I’ll be here alone. I’ve been alone all my life.”

“I’m fine with it if it makes you happy, love.”

“There.” She patted my mother’s hand. “That settles it.” Delilah went back to eating her eggs as if the world hadn’t just tilted a little in her favor.”"

Soon Delilah and Porter are falling in love with each other. As much as I loved their story, I felt they lacked character development. Learning more about them both, as well as some of the other characters, would’ve made the story feel complete, perhaps even to say make it come alive. I wish more was written about Delilah’s parents and two sisters as they each play a huge roll, however despicable, in her life. Instead, the author, Lila Felix (“Felix”) touches on them lightly, fast-forwarding the story so quickly I kept thinking that there had to be more to it than that. One second Delilah is being attacked and in the next a few years have passed. There was nothing about the aftermath of what happened to Delilah, about her feelings and what she went thru. There was no talk of her parents and sisters with respect to the event. We would’ve benefitted greatly had that been included. Perhaps even reading POVs of such characters would’ve given us a story to sink our teeth into. Except for a quick insight about her and family, and what her sisters did, it felt like there were chunks of time and/or pages missing that would’ve made it more complete.

As the story unfolds, it seems there’s a ghost that’s come to haunt both Porter and Delilah. While I didn’t mind the author mixing in a paranormal element, I didn’t find the story to be complete. Actually, incomplete and confusing is how it left me. Like everything else, the author skims over this turn of events. I found the whole thing to be weird. The one thing I couldn’t comprehend was the sacrifice Delilah made for their happiness. It’s not the why that bothered me, but the what she sacrificed. It was hard to comprehend her actions as she did something that was so out of character for her. Not only was I not happy with her decision, I found it to be quite odd and disturbing making me change my feelings about her.

In the end, an intriguing and romantic story of two people falling in love, which unfortunately felt incomplete, with characters that were not fully developed.

His Haunted Heart edition by Lila Felix Crystal Bryant Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Lila Felix gave us a romantic story in a Gothic book. Potter it's hunted by the ghost and the death of his ex fiancé when he's stumble upon The deal of a man willing to sale his daughter. Delilah it's a scarred 20 something women dealing with the jealousy, envy and unworthiness of her family. She was lonely, he was hunted but their love will save each other. I only gave it four stars because I found a few things a little bit rushed including the ending and other stuff that didn't have an explanation. I know this is the first book she does in this genre and I'm not trying to be hard on this review in any other way you should give it a try. Good job Lila! Happy reading!
I loved this book. Usually the romances I read have a little higher steam factor, but this story didn't need any of that to still be wonderful. I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting. The setting was different too- the bayou of Louisiana, it had a regency feel, without being regency AT ALL, if that makes any sense. Not the usual story, that's for sure. The love between Porter (btw, I LOVE that name) and Delilah (also love THAT name) was so sweet. They really did heal each other. And the paranormal aspect- very interesting and well done, although the "price" that had to be paid in the end was devastating for me. But the ending was happy, even with that.
I want more. I want a follow up on these characters. This can't be the end!
I'd suggest this book to anyone. It had a unique feel to it that I also found w/the Bayou Bear Chronicles (which are also definite must reads), not that the stories are alike.
Another great book by Lila Felix!
As someone who is not particularly a fan of historical romance or pnr, I must say with His Haunted Heart I now love both! This very intriguing, very mysterious book, took my on a journey that held me captive from the start.

The story of Delilah, cast aside by her poor, greedy family, scarred for being beautiful and Porter, handsome and wealthy businessman, haunted by his past, who saves Delilah from her wretched life. Although at times I was as baffled as Delilah was that someone of Porter's stature would choose her to be his wife, they surprisingly filled each other's souls like no one else could. For Porter, he found the woman who would stand by his side, truly through sickness, health, wealth, poverty and most importantly, in the face of a ghost name Marie, who has decided to try to make their lives as miserable as the one she previously enjoyed.

This tale of hope for more for both Delilah and Porter was a joy to read. Their tender moments were heartfelt as they learn about each other after a whirlwind marriage and offer truths about the lives they have lead before they became betrothed. Each with shameful secrets, each striving for a better life and finding in each other the love they didn't think they would ever find.

The pnr element was easy to digest for a non-believer like myself and I was totally immersed in the story of Marie and the mysterious Rebel, who held the key to the freedom Porter so desperately sought. Wanting out of the past that continued to keep his family under a cloud of despair, it is with his wife Delilah that they finally unravel the long trail of deceit that has plagued Porter's family for generations. An ultimate sacrifice might be the only way to finally keep the ghosts and their harmful ways away for good.

I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written and beautiful book. Something very different for me that I'm very glad I took the time to read. I am a huge fan of Lila Felix and continue to be amazed by her ability to change things up and give the reader truly unique stories.

Highly recommended!

Eliza ““I was talking to June this morning about finally moving to the mother-in-law house.” I nodded in agreement.

Time and Time Again Ben Elton 9780593073575 Books

I really enjoyed this offering by Ben Elton. It's not a perfect book by any standard. The beginning of the book dragged, causing me to put it down several times and not take it up again for months at a time. However, because I've enjoyed Elton's work in the past, I didn't give up and I'm glad I persevered. As a qualifier, I don't read a lot of time travel books, so if there are cliches here, I would not have picked up on them. The characterization is decent, although there are a few times the main character behaves foolishly to prove the heavy handed point of the butterfly effect. However, the story itself is the true star, the premise of traveling back in time to prevent future calamities. Not an original premise by any means, but Elton has a rather good take on it and tells his story convincingly and with good, nail-bitng suspense. I like that the parameters of the mission itself kept evolving as the protagonist attempted to tie up loose ends. If nothing else, Elton gives a very detailed discussion on the chain of events leading up the Archduke's assassination. I particularly enjoyed the "twist" n the last few chapters. The pacing was off for the last portion of the book, feeling too rushed, which was disappointing. Also, not being a Brit, I didn't realize that "He who dares, wins" is a term employed by their military; I thought it was just a catch phrase Del-boy used in "Only Fools and Horses", so that was a neat cultural Easter Egg for me.

Spoiler:

Others have complained because this doesn't have a happy ending. I don't think a happy ending would have been organic to this story, which featured heavily dystopian elements. It would have been really awkward to somehow make Berne understand why Stanton assassinated the Kaiser and I can't see them ending up happily. It seems as though Elton ended the story the only way he could and I'm glad he did it the way he did.

I enjoyed this book prodigiously and would highly recommend it!

Time and Time Again Ben Elton 9780593073575 Books Reviews

I'm a sucker for a good time travel book, and this is one of the best I've read.

The plot uses a rather unique method of time travel, and the author seems to have thought through all the implications, contradictions, and paradoxes. "If you could go back in time to 1914, and could change anything, what would you change?" The obvious "Kill Hitler" scenario isn't even mentioned, and the reasons for that don't become clear until about 30 pages before the end of the book. Hitler himself is mentioned only twice, in the last 30 pages, and the reasons for that became clear only at the end.

The characterizations are a bit weak, and I didn't like the protagonist (Hugh Stanton) all that much, but the weaving of different timelines in and around each other was very satisfying.

Time and Time Again is a really fun read!
Ben Elton's Time and Time Again is a cut above the usual time travel adventure--and this is, no doubt, a science fiction adventure (which is why I can't understand the one- and two-star reviewers who were expecting a deeper philosophical premise, unless Time and Time Again is a departure from Elton's other novels).

Hugh Stanton, a former special forces soldier, is sent on a one-way journey back in time from 2024 to 1914 to stop WWI. This first part of his mission is to prevent the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, an agent of the Black Hand, a secret Serbian military group. Despite his foreknowledge and superior equipment, Hugh runs into life-threatening obstacles, sometimes created by his own tendency to get distracted by what seem like minor details or unrelated people.

Elton's descriptions and characterizations help readers to breathe along with Hugh the rich atmosphere of pre-WWI Europe while the suspense builds. As Hugh travels, we learn about fascinating characters from the era like the Archduke and his wife Sophie and Kaiser Wilhelm. Hugh even meets Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Leibknecht, leaders of Germany's Social Democratic Party. As the forces of history turn darker and more deadly, Hugh learns he's not the only time traveler sent back to right history. By the end of the novel, we realize many of our assumptions about the storyline were off, way off.

Time and Time Again is very entertaining science fiction, but not 1984 nor Brave New World. Instead, it has more in common with Jack Finney's Time and Again, Stephen King's 11/22/63, and Connie Willis' Doomsday Book (though for Doomsday, be prepared to wade through 70 pages of farce before the story knocks your socks off).
The author is clearly a good writer, with an interesting premise.....but the plot is so depressing--the most depressing time travel novel I've ever read.

I'm a big fan of the time travel genre, with Connie Willis' Hugo award winning "Doomsday Book" being my favorite. (I've also recently enjoyed the fun, action-packed time thriller, "The Chronothon," by Nathan Van Coops).

The first part of the book was promising, starting with an Isaac Newton conspiracy culminating in a future soldier, Stanton, being sent back to the past to prevent mistakes of the 20th century.

But after Stanton arrives, things don't go as planned. There are unnecessary deaths, a failed romance, and a changed future that is hopelessly dismal. There is no happy ending.

I felt depressed after finishing the book. I'm giving it 4 stars because it is well written, but the depressing plot only merits 2 stars, IMO.

Go read "The Chronothon" instead.

The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings the Hobbit / the Fellowship of the Ring / the Two Towers / the JRR Tolkien 9780345538376 Books

The hard-copy versions look nice and all, but I wanted to know more about the Kindle edition. And I wasn't looking for reviews of the story. That's been the subject of glowing praise for decades. I got tired of trying to find a review that would answer the only question I had. Couldn't find one, so I finally broke down and BOUGHT the Kindle one-volume edition. And the answer is: Yes, the table of contents is all bundled together at the beginning, as opposed to having a separate T-o-C for each "volume" (stop sneering, I've seen other one-volume e-books where you have to skip through the whole first section to get to the table of contents for the second section). More importantly, the T-o-C actually works. That's right, I can go straight to any chapter by tapping that chapter on the T-o-C (again, other e-books had a static T-o-C where no amount of tapping would take me anywhere and I had to keep flipping pages to get to the chapter I wanted). Everything else seems to be functioning without problems. Dictionary, highlighting, synching between my Kindle and my phone, etc., all work perfectly. And in addition to being about half the cost of the three separate volumes, the one-volume edition helps to keep the scrolling at a minimum when searching through my library.

The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings the Hobbit / the Fellowship of the Ring / the Two Towers / the JRR Tolkien 9780345538376 Books Reviews

For some people it doesn't matter, but for me, when I bought a serie of 4 books, the covers have to be the same, but here, I have two different cover, ugly, and two others who respect the esthetic of the movies. It's supposed to be a gift, I'm very upset.
I have always loved medieval sort of books and movies. But I had never seen or read any of the LOTR. Over this summer i planned on reading all of them and i have just finished them. What i can say is that these are amazing.
You always hear about how much of a world J.R.R Tolkien creates but you never understand this until you read the book.
The story and the characters let you fall into the midsts of the book with every turn of the page you wonder what will happen next.
Also for people who haven't read or watched the movies it is amazing to watch the movies after you read the book.
Best quote"One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them."
I only hope I can find another book to live up to the quality these did.
What can you say about a classic? I'd never read these books all the way through before, and was determined to try, despite remembering what I had read as being tedious and somewhat purple-prose-ish. I apparently remembered wrong - coming back as an adult, these are beautiful books, very well-written and of course true epic fantasy. It may be that my tastes have changed, or just that I've matured, but these will definitely be reread many times.

My only issue is that with the version, the footnotes seemed to be messed up. Many of them only bring up a page number (with no link), which may be how it was in the original books, but others seem to apply to footnotes further down the page, or just not at all to the thing they're noted from. Frustrating.
I am beyond disappointed. The font is too small to read, but I thought the artwork would make up for this since I already own editions with larger font. So many beautiful pieces of art were uploaded! Where can I find this edition? I just wasted $27. None of this artwork is found in the paperback edition. Is it found in the $90 hardback edition? I’m debating if I should just send this back since I can’t even read it 😭 These books are tiny!
I have never read the lord of the Rings before but I have watched the movies and played the games and I loved them. However I was always confused at what was going on at times but after reading the books everything makes so much sense now. I honestly liked the books more than the movies and although they are similar the books have way more content and details in them. So if you loved the movies I would 100% suggest getting the books.

Speaking of the books I got the paperback version and they are beautiful. Although they are simple and the covers are one plain color per book it still has that sense of style and simplicity. They covers and case are thick and well made. Although their were points in the books where the words were slightly faded I still has no problem reading them.

I'm not even going to talk about the story since just trust me when I say its one of the best series ever. I have never read or even considered reading a series twice but I honestly think that I might read this one a second time that's how much I liked it.

So if you liked the movies and aren't sure about reading the books I would say go for it and get them since you wont be disappointed. If you never watched the movies then get both them and the books)
Review for The Lord of the Rings.

I'll keep it brief, this is not a review of the actual story but of this specific edition. I have attached many pictures that I hope help you decide if this is an edition you want to buy.

Pros
- The font is big and easy to read.
- 65 beautiful illustrations by Alan Lee that bring the story to life.

Cons
- Slipcover is an opaque plastic, whit a modern look that I think doesn't complement the book.
- One or two blank pages before and/or after each illustration.

Overall I think this is a great edition and it's worth buying.
I bought it as a gift for my best friend, and the book is absolutely gorgeous! The cover has nice fabric-like texture, the pages are white and smooth, it has lots of illustrations. The book is big and heavy, so you won't be able to carry it around with you, it's designed for home reading. Can't recommend this edition enough either as a gift or an addition to your library, it is a great buy.
The hard-copy versions look nice and all, but I wanted to know more about the edition. And I wasn't looking for reviews of the story. That's been the subject of glowing praise for decades. I got tired of trying to find a review that would answer the only question I had. Couldn't find one, so I finally broke down and BOUGHT the one-volume edition. And the answer is Yes, the table of contents is all bundled together at the beginning, as opposed to having a separate T-o-C for each "volume" (stop sneering, I've seen other one-volume e-books where you have to skip through the whole first section to get to the table of contents for the second section). Dictionary, highlighting, synching between my and my phone, etc., all work perfectly. And in addition to being about half the cost of the three separate volumes, the one-volume edition helps to keep the scrolling at a minimum when searching through my library.

Plum Island Nelson DeMille Books Reviews

I've read many of Nelson Demille's novels and decided to go back to this first John Corey story recently. It is a book I believe that I read at some point in the past, probably shortly after it was first published in 1997.

John Corey is one of those characters that can be found in many stories of this type - irreverent and smart-alecky, a rule breaker who somehow still manages to cleverly solve the case even while pissing off his boss and half of the people around him. Oh, and not to forget he has an eye for the ladies and manages to partner up with an attractive female at some point in each story, often leading to some degree of romantics along the way.

So it is formulaic in that sense, but enjoyable as these stories usually are. The setting in this case is Long Island, bringing in some of the wealth that inhabits the area, as well as a secret U.S. Government lab residing on, you guessed it, Plum Island. Plus - buried treasure! (The skull and crossbones on the book cover should be a giveaway to that aspect of the story). Altogether there are plenty of story elements to keep it interesting, and DeMille writes well and it is an easy read with enough suspense to keep the reader motivated to the end.
This was my second Nelson DeMille book. I previously read The Gold Coast, which I loved. But Plum Island was only okay.

I have two reservations about it. First, this time out I didn't find the sarcastic, jokey narrative funny. The Gold Coast's narrator-protagonist was also kind of like that, but it was more restrained and not distracting there (in fact, it was a pleasure in that book). Here, it was over the top. I found John Corey to be obnoxious at times and simply not funny. (Example I didn't know that haughtily referring to yourself in the French -- "Moi" -- is a real hoot; must be because John Corey does it all the time).

Second, it just wasn't that strong as mysteries go. It unfolds in a very linear way, no twists or turns, really. Corey uncovers clues and reaches big conclusions way too easily, and by about 55-60% into the book, you can pretty much see where it's going.

I give it three stars because it has its occasional charms. It wins a few points for a good setting which is easy to envision, and frankly a good hook that dominates the first 100 pages or so -- the story had a promising set up at the get go. But it was only okay after that. I don't expect to read any more John Corey novels, but I probably will try The Gold Coast's sequel, The Gate House.
Plum Island is the third of this author's books I have now read and I am hooked. i'm working on number four now and enjoying every minute. He's a great writer with a mix of knowledge of investigative work, inter-agency conflicts (all true), sarcasm and great humor. the self-deprecating humor of his John Corey and other lead characters, is a true skill. clearly, Mr. DeMille does extensive research on his topics and locations. i actually did some fact checking on things I hadn't known before and found that he took real facts, local lore, geography and procedures, mixing them into a carefully crafted story that rings true and holds my interest. That is not always easy because I am an extensive reader and have experience in the fields of which he writes. But he has hooked me and I am ordering more of his work. This author has made it to my personal Hit Parade.
I love the John Corey books. this isn't the best of them but any John Corey is worth the read. And this has an interesting mystery at the center of it. When two scientists at a highly restricted germ warfare lab on Plumb Island are killed, John Corey is the only person who doesn't buy the theory that they were trying to sell their latest discovery to the highest bidder and that he should keep it hushed for the sake of national security. But, this turns out to be incorrect and the real reason is a straight up cop-shop mystery with the patented Corey humor pushing the story along. Like a lot of the Corey books, this isn't action packed, it's a deductive mystery with some memorable characters and that's fine with me.
Not nearly as good as the reviews would lead you to believe -- unless you really enjoy silly juvenile behavior. As usual, DeMille puts together a good story and he knows how to write -- but he absolutely ruins the book with the obnoxious character of John Corey. I've read a number of DeMille's more recent books and expected (and received) Corey's typical excessive smartass comments -- well, I knew what I was getting into, so that's not even a critique. This one, however, goes even farther over the top. There was a heavy emphasis on Corey's sex drive (Neanderthal competition for women that I've never witnessed by any man anywhere in my entire life), to the point I was just disgusted with it, and his behavior (e.g., deliberately vandalizing things with an axe because he was angry) would get him fired from any police agency anywhere.
I'm just going to say it strait, I LIKED the book, but I do not love it or hate it. The reason why is, while it has a few major shortcomings, it also has the elements of a great book.
So here are the Pro's and Con's of the book:
Pro: many engaging characters Con: Most of those characters appear and disappear randomly, leaving the reader very confused. Pro: There are many twists and turns in the plot, making the story interesting Con: There is no build up, battles that should be anticipated and exiting just sort of appear and then become resolved, characters that should be mourned when they die are just brushed to the side. Pro: the characters develop over time Con: It is never explained how they develop, for example one of the characters comes to realize he has a responsibility to his people, and finds the strength to oppose the queen he's served loyally for years, how? Another character suddenly decides to become a servant to another character for no apparent reason beyond the fact that they travel together for a few days, why? Pro: Fast paced plot Con: It moves so fast your head begins to spin, the book seems to cover the course of several years, and often jumps periods of a few months from one paragraph to the next. Pro: Cool and original magic and magical creatures Con: The rules of this magic is never explained. I still don't understand what Surrogate means or what it means to be a Neutralizer (before you tell me the dictionary definitions of surrogate and neutralizer, read the book and you'll know the definitions in the book are different). Con: The magical creatures are also never described. Some are normal, like the Griffon, but then you have all these other creatures that you don't know and can't visualize because they aren't described. Finally Con: the title. I read the whole book and ashfruits were only mentioned maybe five times in the story, and since they appear to be naturally gold in color a 'Golden Ashfruit' doesn't seem to indicate a particular ashfruit. Also the ashfruits don't appear to be at all relevant to the plot of the story in anyway, so I don't really understand why the book was named after them. Maybe it has some sort of symbolism I'm not seeing, but I don't know.
I really wanted to give this book a glowing review, but I can't. The fast pace, many characters, and unexplained complexities of the world just left me confused and caused the events of the book to have very little build up. If I could give advice to the author I would say to break this book into three books and fill them up with more detail, explanations, dialog, and thoughts from the characters to make the world more understandable and reader friendly.
very good book to reading ,I would say read it and i think you'll in joy it as much as I did. would like to read more from this artist.
Could not get into it at all. Only read first few chapters.
The storyline was less than fluid. With everything going on in the story, this book is a great candidate for a map and a dictionary of characters. I won't be reading anymore, I was greatly disappointed.
Really intriguing book with lots of characters to keep track of. The imagery is strong and always keeps my mind in tune with what the scene conveys. My main genre of book isn't fantasy and faeries, but I did enjoy this as my first one!
The story seemed a bit common for a magical story with fairies and for some reason I was thrown off with the obscure names of places and people. Very unusual for me since I always thought my mind was creative (I guess we live and learn) I will have to read it again at a different time to compare the review I just gave it though (just to be fair)
With a pinch of Greek Mythology here and a dab of Hebrew mythology there, Harris delivers a high court filled with intrigue. Armed with a large cast of characters, Harris draws you in to the royal court of Lumen. Taking place in an alternate world filled with faeries, griffins, and brownies (to name a few of the mystical creatures that inhabit the Lumen realm) Harris does a great job weaving an interesting story.

In a world where Fae and other creatures rule and humans have either been killed or enslaved, Maybn ( Mabs) is the daughter of the King who is being made to marry for the sake of securing more power. Mabs is strong willed and not easily manipulated. Nigel is her human servant ( slave, since he does not get paid a wage and was captured and forced to work in the castle) who is caught between a dangerous game of war and power.

Readers who enjoy fantasy authors such as Terry Prachett will enjoy The Golden Ashfruit which is filled with mystical beings, displays of supernatural powers and my favorite, beautiful wild griffins.
A very twisty tale. A main character is introduced, and throughout the book you keep thinking mainly of that main character, then it twists and ends with a secondary character. It was sort of difficult to keep up with all the court royals, and the minions, but I love challenges. I found this book adventurous, cunning, underhanded, creative, and twisted romance (haha). If this writer were to write another book that is magical, I will definitely read it. Good writer, great imagination!
Very interesting story with a twist! Women had to be creative to survive the old west and some were more entrepreneurial than others. One side story reflects the stigma of divorce that leads to a tragedy that unfortunately still happens today. The characters are well developed and you start to rot for them from the first chapter. You want to know what happens so you can't possibly stop reading!
The story was a little slow in places. However the part were the lawman said he would arrest her. I thought I'd die.
An unusual turn of events indeed. Th ways of the west were
To the extreme sometimes and even with fiction life holds many surprises. This could also have been a true story.
Sonja Stover Bracey
Mrs. Charlotte Morris a young widow was spending a small fortune to order enjoyed up a brothel called The Blue Sapphire. Sheriff Graham Winston was not very happy with this because they already had the Madame X ran by a man that he did not like at all. Dominic Knight owned the other brothel and was not very mind to the ladies who worked for him. There was something about Mrs. Morris that Sheriff Winston took a liking to and he was going to go out of his way to get acquainted with her. This story is interesting in the feeling of these two and what goes on in this town with the other characters.
I enjoyed reading about the sheriff and Mrs. Morris. How she swears she will never remarry after her husband got killed
I love your books. Just couldn't like either of the characters in this book. Felt no attachments to anyone. To harsh and insincere. It was like the characters were schizophrenic.
This book kept my interested all the way through to the end. It shows how hard life was for women back then
I loved this book! Graham and Charlotte , two people who had been married and lost their spouses, Graham raising a son on his own and being the Sheriff, Charlotte starting her own business as a Madam are trying to move on and find each other. The sparks that fly around these two are sweet, funny and breathe taking. You must read

The Iron Thorn Caitlin Kittredge Books

The Iron Thorn blew me away in all the best ways possible. I'm a huge fan of Fantasy and of Steampunk. Caitlin Kitteredge takes these two genres, throws in a bit of dysptopia, and blends it together into something beautifully unique and wonderful.

The Iron Thorn follows Aoife through a tough time in her life. Her family has a history of madness, and it seems to hit them each around their 16th birthday. Unfortunately for Aoife....that's just weeks away. The reader watches as Aoife is swept up in a whirlwind adventure to figure out her past, her present, and her future all at once. This is a dark and epic quest, that is filled with some of the most intriguing and disturbing creatures imaginable. I don't know if these characters live in Kitteredge's brain, but if they do I'd love to talk creepiness with her! I love that there is an underlying link to fae here as well. Keep a look out, it's hidden wonderfully well.

It is really the world building that brings this book to life. The city of Lovecraft is built from bits and pieces of H.P. Lovecraft's writing, with other elements thrown in. As I mentioned above, this isn't just a Fantasy novel. There is so much more to it. Lovecraft and it's surrounding areas are gorgeously dismal. There is a sense of fear and darkness that lays over everything. The atmosphere that is built makes you want to crawl under a blanket and read by lamplight, even if it is daytime outside. No kidding, there were descriptions in this book that made me shudder visibly. However it's not all dark if you're worried about that. Underneath everything is that fantastical sense of adventure and camaraderie. I won't spoil anything, but it's fantastic.

The characters, even besides just Aoife, burn off the page! Aoife is fierce, brave and utterly loyal. Her friend Cal is very rooted in what is right, normal and "proper" but is also an extremely loyal friend to Aoife. Then there is Dean, sweet Dean. The vagabond boy who turns guide, and just so happens to be the apple of Aoife's eye. Brave to a fault, and more than what he seems, he was absolutely my favorite character in the book. Each one of them has their own beautiful personality and wit. Add in the colorful characters that they encounter as they travel and I was completely swept away into the world of Lovecraft.

I can't say anything more. I just don't know what else to write. If you can't already tell, The Iron Thorn was everything I was looking for in a book. It pulled me out of my reading slump, and back into a love of the written world.

I wouldn't quite call this High Fantasy, since it still has one foot in reality, but definitely do your research if you aren't generally a fan of this genre. The Iron Thorn might not appeal to you. However, if you are a lover of Fantasy, of Steampunk, or even of Dystopian fiction, pick up a copy stat! I promise that if you allow yourself to get lost in the words, lost in the world, you'll experience something so amazingly unique it might just make you drop your jaw.
I really need to read more steampunk because I really enjoyed The Iron Thorn. Now it did take me a few chapters to get fully sucked into the story since I felt it started off a little slow but once things took off and all these crazy twists kept being thrown in and people not being who you think they are ... well I was totally invested in the book.

The romance scenes could have been done more better they were a little lackluster but the characters Aoife ( I still am not sure how to pronounce that), Dean and Cal were all very intriguing. I loved Dean because of how strong of a character he was and then there was Cal who is Aoife's best friend and was a total surprise in many ways. And then Aoife who was just as strong of a character as her male counterpart Dean. The girl had balls and was not afraid of a little adventure.

Overall the world building was done very well and quite unique. I found this to be an enjoyable read and will be picking up the next book soon.
This author isn't the first adult writer to cross over to YA, but she's one of the best. Steampunk, urban fantasy, alternate history, dystopian fiction, romance, gothic novel, you name it The Iron Thorn combines the best of all these subgenres, throwing in one of those genetic ticking clocks plus an actual ticking clock that's the nerve center of an entire house made of magic-infused gears. Which is to say, if you liked Fever Crumb, Leviathan, Lament, and Twilight, you should take a look at Kittredge's new YA offering.

As the jacket flap puts it, "Aoife's family is unique in the worst way." Her mother has gone crazy and is in an insane asylum, while her beloved older brother lost his mind, too, nearly killing Aoife before running away.

Aoife lives in the dark city of Lovecraft, where she studies in the strict school of engineers, applying reason and science to practical problems. Her fellow student and best friend, Cal, stands by her, but even he is uneasy when it appears that Aoife herself will lose her mind when she turns sixteen. The city authorities, as represented by the Proctors, also have their eye on the girl, which is a very bad thing.

Then Aoife gets a cryptic message from her brother Conrad and sets off to find him, presumably at their father's home in a village to the north. Crossing the city, let alone the countryside, is a dreadful prospect, considering the threat of death or capture from monsters like the nightjars and government spies in the form of clockwork ravens. Fortunately, Aoife and Cal find a scruffy guide named Dean, who has secrets of his own. He knows a guy with an airship, and it appears he won't sell them out to the monsters that live in the sewer system, so off they go.

The little company eventually reach the house where Aoife's father lived, only there's no sign of him or of Conrad. Of course, Aoife has never met the man. And his house turns out to be very strange indeed. That's even before Aoife has her first encounter with the fairy realm, whose denizens--most notably a fey named Tremaine--may prove to be the greatest threat of all. But Aoife, despite her growing attraction to Dean and her loyalty to Cal, will do anything to get her brother back. Anything.

This book is a thoroughly marvelous tale, one of my favorites so far in 2011. In fact, I felt that my experience of YA horror/steampunk/dystopian fantasy was refreshed by reading The Iron Thorn. I also appreciate how the main plot thread comes to a satisfying conclusion, even as new problems set us up for the next volume in this series. In addition, for those of you looking for romance, Aoife's interactions with Dean aren't cliché in the least; they're clever and bumpy and real (with Cal acting sweetly jealous, to boot).

I know you're all wondering how to pronounce the main character's name, so I looked it up that would be ee-fa.

Now, please get your shivers on and enter the alarming world of Aoife's Lovecraft!

Note for Worried Parents This is a book for teens. The horror elements are pretty horrific, and there's some teen attraction with eventual kissing.
I ordered this audible download and was very impressed. My husband had told me about him so I was interested in it. It made me laugh and cry. I liked how he could've been so angry at some of his family members but he wasn't. He understood them even though he had every reason to be upset. I have told several friends about it and I just laugh at some of the things he said. It isn't that I am laughing at him. I am laughing with him because he has a great sense of humor. I am sure that is what made his wife attracted to him.

its a great book to make you appreciate what you have and will make you re-evaluate yourself for sure.
This is the story about a man, who as a young boy, was overcome by a mysterious illness, and left in what the medical profession viewed as a vegetative state. Year after year, he just lay there, til at some point in his teens, awareness began dawning upon him, and consciousness arose. The problem is that he seemed unable to communicate this to anyone, until a sensitive caregiver noticed that to her he seemed sentient and did her best to persuade his parents that beneath his seeming immobility and inertia there was a sentient, aware human being and that there were ways of discovering this. His loving parents listened and took the gambit. From then on, he was given the tools that would enable him to communicate, allowing him to begin making himself heard and, eventually, completely change his life. His is an amazing journey of personal discovery, which he shares with the reader. It is a well-written and engaging first person account of a life recovered.
I saw an article on Facebook about Martin and went right to to download the book. What a terrible thing, to be trapped in your own body, I had to know more. It's a great story, full of heartbreak and hope. The abuse is blood boiling and I wish the book addressed if there was any consequences to those disgusting people. It's frightening that such things can and do go on. Martin makes me aware of what a lazy ass I am. I haven't done half as much and I have none of the hurdles he has had.
Martin's opening statement in a presentation he gave in the book captures the message of his book best. He states, "I would like you all to stop for a moment and really think about not having a voice or any means to communicate," my computer voice says. "You could never say, 'Pass the salt' or tell someone the really important things like 'I love you.' You can't tell someone that you're uncomfortable, cold, or in pain." Do you distinctly remember a time where you wanted to say something to a friend so badly, but you held it in? How about the time you raised your hand in class and wanted to be called on, but your teacher never called on you? These scenarios are just two specific examples of places where communicators are expected to be patient within the communicating world. The book, "Ghost Boy", is an autobiography written by Martin Pistorius from Johannesburg, South Africa. Martin did not have any help writing the book, he wrote it himself. At twelve years old, Martin developed an unknown illness that left him unable to speak, so he spent fourteen years without a voice, making him incapable of communicating with everyone surrounding him.
The book is told in first person and goes into great detail about his life story and experience of being unable to communicate for several years. He goes into detail about the situations he was exposed to when he was unable to communicate within group homes, at home, and the thoughts that went through his head daily. He discusses how he went about receiving the AAC (Augmentative Alternative Communication) device, how he learned to use it, and how much it positively impacted his life. The way the story is portrayed from the viewpoint of Martin helps the reader understand exactly what was going through Martin's mind rather than someone putting words in his mouth. It personally helped me, as a reader, connect on a deeper level to not necessarily fully "understand" what he was going through, but instead "feel" the power, joy, and pain of all of his experiences through the use of the communication tools that he renewed over the years.
One of my favorite quotes from the book states, "God and I didn't talk about the big things in life-we didn't engage in philosophical debates or argue about religion-but I talked to Him endlessly because I knew we shared something important. I didn't have proof that He existed, but I believed in Him anyway because I knew He was real. God did the same for me. Unlike people, He didn't need proof that I existed-He knew I did." Pistorius shows that he had a trust in God that was never instilled in him through anyone, but instead his trust in God is solely based on his own faith and one on one experience with God and all he has blessed him with.
My other favorite takeaway from this book was the love story between Joanna and Martin. Not often do you hear of a love story as heartfelt as this one. Joanna loves Martin for who he is and all that he is capable of. The amount of strength the two of them have and the bond that they share is quite inspiring. Martin has struggled throughout his life with many different endeavors, but as he states "I've lived my whole life as a burden. She makes me feel weightless." The way Martin uses his words to describe a beautiful love story is nothing short of amazing.
Pistorius makes it easy for readers who may not be familiar with AAC to follow along with the story line and understand what is going on. The main point to understand for readers that are unfamiliar with AAC is that Martin does not have any verbal language after the age of twelve. He is fully there cognitively and is aware of everything that is going on around him, he just cannot verbally communicate. He uses a device to help him communicate with others after he has an evaluation completed in the middle of the book. If you, as a reader, are looking for a book that will make you feel every emotion, I suggest you try reading "Ghost Boy." The storyline is easy to follow, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an inspirational story within the field of Speech-Language Pathology.
So many books are so poorly written that reading them is drudgery for me. I'm an avid reader, but I find myself putting quite a few books back on the shelf after the first few chapters. Mr. Pastorius grabbed my attention on page one and kept it through the acknowledgements at the end. I still can't stop thinking about him. I've been an RN for many years. This book made me question my attitude toward many patients who've been in my care. I'm kind and compassionate, for sure, but could I have missed something with some of my most debilitated patients? For at least one of them was there a keen intellect, hidden by a silent, twisted body? This book makes me wonder.

For Beau Simon Gandossi Books

Quite a life! Quite a story!!
At first I thought perhaps this was based on the true life story of Sarah Ashdown. But as I looked for information to say this was her true story I found only “historical fiction” labeling it. It seems pretty accurate to true events but many miraculous escapes makes you realize it’s mostly fiction. It must be.
I didn’t care so much at times for the way it jumped from present day back to the war and vise versa. But once the story moved on and gathered some speed and excitement, I didn’t want to put it down. It was very well done and quite a story!
I don’t want to say much about the storyline. I see one reviewer gave line by line practically of the entire book. Why bother to read it after their commentary??
It is real to life, with the sorrow, the suffering, the conflicts within yourself as well as conflicting views with family members, friends and resistance fighters!! The one thing most everyone had in common was wishing the war would end as soon as possible. What a horrible time in history. No one you could trust, and trying times in every way. Imagine trying to keep a good outlook and smile on your face.

There were some misspellings and areas where it was hard to figure out the sentence but it was minor and still good reading.
If you are interested in this time period it is a book you won’t want to miss. The characters are very real in every area of the story. The circumstances and events are very real and you are drawn into the story as one taking part in things just as the other characters are. Drama, drama, drama. Love, hate, hope, despair, fear, arrogance, pride, passion, life and death, forgiveness and regrets!! And much more!

Enjoy!

For Beau Simon Gandossi Books Reviews

A strong proud woman getting her way into leaving her footprint in history. Simon Gandossi gives us a book full of feelings, it brings us in a journey through WWII Europe, making us literally live those days from a prominent point of view. I personally couldn't quit it until I read the last page. A reading I absolutely recommend to those who love good books. Good work Simon!
This is a great book it made me care about the characters and I couldn't put it down because I wanted to see what happened and how it was going to end
I don't normally write reviews, but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading For Beau, it is well written and it is a book that you can not put down, you just need to know what happens.
This book will haunt you days after reading. I am still haunted. Set in Britton during the height of World War II for Beau tells the moving and compelling tale basically of women’s secret participation in the World War. Sarah Ashdown is found and her story is remarkably harrowing. Gandossi wraps history and fiction into a believability that harrowing and emotional. While this is historical fiction you can not forget that this fiction is not too far from facts. The character of Sarah Ashdown is probably based on a real person. I think that is what makes For Beau so heart turning.
Gandossi writes his words with passion making you unable to pull away. While I love history, historical fiction is not really my thing, yet Gandossi entertained me. Haunted me with his work. The only thing that bothered me was his use of italics. He used italics to represent the present and non-italics to represent the past. This disrupted my reading a bit for the editor in me would think the present would be in non-italics and the past in italics. That aside the book was enjoyable and Sarah Ashdowns patriotic tale will resonate with me for a while.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Caveman" by Avery Kloss. This is a time travel romance about a woman whose plane goes missing in a electrical storm. She’s a curvy girl, a make up artist. A photographer is with them as well and a fashion model, who I wanted to smack silly for her antics, but she grew on me towards the end.

The story skips from the past to the present with two running storylines. First it’s Janet’s story, then the archaeologist, Amy Sandhurst, who discovers she time traveled. So, you’re basically getting two romances in one! I found the details awesome, especially the archaeology stuff. The author did her research.

Being written in first person, I felt like I was there. I felt like everything that was happening to the characters was happening to me. I usually don't care much for first person, but the author made it work. I feared for the characters and cheered for them when things went well.

This story hooked me and reeled me in. I didn’t know what to expect when they first met the primitive people, but Claire’s behavior had me laughing out loud. I just so enjoyed this story. It was a shame when it ended, but I was pleased to find parts 2 and 3 are up now. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Janet and Gundre and everybody else. Good job!
Caveman #1 Time Travel Romance
By Avery Kloss
4/5 stars

Janet is a recently engaged, photographer in the modeling world who does a lot of traveling for her job. But one unfortunate flight never makes its final destination. Not only does that flight crash, but the survivors have time-traveled to an ancient world where the people aren’t even close to modern-day human beings and huge beasts roamed the earth.

Is it possible for modern humans to survive during this time-period which was extremely difficult for its natural born people to survive? When the survivors meet up with a group of men, who seem to be hunters, it does take them awhile to come to grips with the possibility that they time traveled. They also have to deal with the knowledge that they may never make it back to their own time-period and will forever be stuck in the past.

Gundre, a Clovis-period man, is interested in Janet and her well-being. Though they can’t speak to each other, they do find ways to communicate. Their communication has much to do with pointing, showing and a whole lot of body language. Gundre & Janet have a steamy relationship and quickly form a longer spanning relationship. We get a view in the daily life within the tribe and how they survive for long-term periods.

Meanwhile back in present day, which happens to be about 2 years after the plane crash, archaeologists discover a cave full of Clovis-era artifacts. Though it looks as though the cave has been vandalized with a modern twitter handle, carbon-test dating actually dates the paint used as 10,000 years ago. This causes the archaeologists to start searching for logical explanations and trying to figure out and prove what they can.

The book technically ends in an HEA without going into the futures of either the survivors living 10,000 years ago in the past or the modern-day archaeologists or the fiancée that Janet left behind. However there are 2 more books in this series. I have purchased them, but so far haven’t read them.
Spoilers Possible. Has potential but......I read and enjoy a wide variety of literature, and that includes stories about heroines who make decisions I may or may not agree with. However, in order to feel sympathy or empathy for these heroines, and I often do, I need to be able to understand where they are coming from. The heroine in this story just seems to lack a moral compass in her decisions that would help me see that she is struggling with, oh, say, her decision to jump in the sack so soon with a guy that is not her fiance. Don't get me wrong, when you are potentially stuck in the past forever, you are probably going to end up in that situation, life goes on and all that, but the decision itself needs to be something that is thought out more, a lot more. This is not a case of my thinking she made a wrong decision, but it is my thought that the author could have given the heroine a bit more depth by giving her more thoughts than, "Oh, hey, we could be stuck here forever, though it has only been a day, and I should grab the gusto." (Not the heroine's actual thoughts, of course, but you get it) There were other instances where I just thought that I would probably not find this shallow woman very fun to hang out with. There was some interesting world building, and I did actually really like some parts of the book, but I cannot warm up to the heroine. I did like the main hero/caveman. He was super sweet, but I am unsure about his fate in later stories if the reviews for 2 and 3 are anything to go by. The writer has some real potential, but I like my heroines to be less self absorbed.

Lament The Faerie Queen Deception Maggie Stiefvater 9780738713700 Books

I'm a seventy-two year old man. I've always liked children's literature but I wasn't sure I'd like young adult literature, but I was very surprised by how well Maggie Stiefvater conceived the characters in this novel, how believable I found them and how easy it was for me to suspend disbelief. The dialogue and the thoughts and motives of the characters rang true for me and I was drawn to the chemistry between the protagonists. I've always been able to suspend disbelief as long as the author adheres to her/his own internal logic and Stiefvater did that extremely well almost to the very end of her story. In fact I would've given the book four stars but for the ending which seemed almost like the ending of TV program where it becomes obvious that the writers, having created a mesmerizing story, must bring it to a hasty and not very believable end within the 40 minutes to and hour that a TV schedule has allowed. It seems more excusable when there is a give time allotment on TV. To put it another way, in light of the tensions and mystical/magical rules that were implied up until the very end of this novel the ending make no sense to me.

Lament The Faerie Queen Deception Maggie Stiefvater 9780738713700 Books Reviews

This is, as far as I can see, Maggie Stiefvater’s first published novel, and what a first book. Like many of her books, magic—both good and evil—revolves as a central theme, with a difficult, quite interesting romance is simultaneously developing. I particularly appreciate her ability to write books that simultaneously have one foot in the real world, while the supernatural realm intertwines almost everywhere. These characters evolve nicely over the story, and seem both believable and (of course) unbelievable.
I think you’ll enjoy this book. I know I did.
More of a YA book than I expected, best for tweens and romantic teens. The music and Celtic myth references added interest, but the story line is mostly wish fulfillment a girl who sees herself as ordinary and unpopular but has great musical talent turns out to be beautiful, the love object of a gorgeous guy, and possessing magical talents far beyond her dreams. The story pulled me along, but near the end (small spoiler here), I was disturbed by how little attention she pays to her devoted best friend James after his life is saved.

Note that the version has no table of contents and limited navigation.
I spent the first half or so of the book trying to figure out exactly what was going on. There was something about the book that felt as if I'd already read it, and something about it that felt just out of my reach. Even when the book concluded, I still felt there was something missing. Stiefvater is clearly drawing on some traditional legends of faerie, but unless you're already familiar with the legends, it's hard to catch up to the story. I wish there had been a companion guide with the original legend, although the ballads sung by the protagonist throughout the story give some of it. I just felt that it came in too many tattered pieces for my mind to sew up a complete story quilt. I also felt that she relied too heavily on stock characters-- the doting and unrequited male best friend, the evil aunt, the mysterious lover, the clueless parents, etc.-- a little too much. It lacked the depth it made me want. However, it was a lovely and engaging story, and my time was not wasted in reading it. I will be picking up the sequel to see if it comes together in the end...
Dierdre Monaghan is a gifted young harpist. And as she learns during the summertime events of Lament, she's a cloverhand, one who can see faeries. It all begins when the equally musically inclined Luke Dillon begins pursuing her. Despite his good looks and charming nature, there's something mysterious - and perhaps dangerous - about him. Then, strange things start happening to Diedre's family and her best friend James. Even worse, a vicious faerie named Aodhan is after her, and only Luke seems capable of stopping him. Can Dierdre escape the pull of the faerie world? Or will she have to confront the Faerie Queen who wants her dead?

In some ways, I was torn by Lament because of the type of YA fantasy it is. I've struggled with high-school settings, dynamics, and character stereotypes before; and that was the case here. The first half of the story was uneventful, too. It focused mostly on Dierdre and Luke's "courtship," so most of the danger and revelations were postponed for the second half. And it didn't help that the romance felt too superficial for me to believe. Maybe I'm too rational, but "insta-love" or anything close to it just doesn't work for me.

Why did I give Lament 3 stars despite those criticisms? Firstly, because Maggie Stiefvater is a magician with words. Her writing style is smooth, carefully crafted, and vivid. This allows her narrative voice for Dierdre to pulse with life and the musical aspects of Lament to lilt and dance off the page - and stories about art or artistically inclined characters fascinate me, anyways. ) These highlights persuaded me to keep reading in spite of my hang-ups, and ultimately I was satisfied by the exciting, magic-filled second half and surprisingly dark, violent ending. I definitely want to read more of Stiefvater's work, because I see so much potential in her technique. It's just that the story of Lament didn't totally appeal to me.

The Man Must Marry Janet Chapman 9781416505303 Books

STORY BRIEF:
Abram built a shipping empire. He is dying and went to a small coastal town in Maine to spend his last days. He met Willa who owns a casket making company. He wants Willa to marry one of his grandsons, for her benefit and for their benefit. His three grandsons lost their parents at an early age and were raised by Abram. The three grandsons are confirmed bachelors. Abram retired and gave Willa his proxy to vote to choose one of them as his successor. Willa traveled to and attended the board meeting in New York City as a favor to Abram. For some reason, Sam (one of the grandsons) is nearby to see and help her survive accidents such as getting her purse caught in the elevator door, getting locked out of her hotel room, etc. Willa is suffering guilt over some things in her life. She doesn't live a normal life due to guilt, and she's a bit whiny.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
This was a pleasant romance novel, but there was nothing new or different enough to make it stand out from the rest. I think Sam fell in love with Willa too soon and too easily. He dated a number of women over the years for no more than a few months each. I didn't understand how he "fell in love at first sight" with a dowdy, unsophisticated, accident prone woman. I would have preferred watching things happen between them for awhile before he fell in love.

Minor irritation (publisher's fault): Sam has hair on his chest. The guy on the cover does not.

DATA:
Story length: 340 pages. Swearing language: moderate to strong. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 2. Total number of sex scene pages: 9. Setting: current day New York City, Keelstone Cove, Maine, and sailing in the Atlantic. Copyright: 2008. Genre: contemporary romance.
Janet always writes wonderful stories full of humor, romance and happy endings; although getting to that happy ending isn't always easy This one is so good and a fun read.
I love Janet's writing, her characters, and the way she still uses Romance when so many authors are all about action and adventure.
A very nicely written story that pulls you in and keeps you there. Looking forward to downloading the next book.
I can never put down a Janet Chapman novel. I find myself totally enraptured in the storyline and just can't stop reading till I get to the always-satisfying end. Any of Janet's books are fantastic, but the ones that touch on time travel and magic are fantastic. Try one - you'll like it!
great read
I loved this book. Sam's grandfather goes off to die and he sends Willa to meet his grandsons. He really wants them to marry. Sam decides he wants her and tells his brothers to find their own partidge. Willa has a hard time because she does'nt want to marry ever again. But that changes as she falls in love with Sam. I fell in love with all three brothers, they were wonderful. I have all her books and i love rereading them.
Love the author!!!! Her books are light hearted, funny and serious at times. She pulls you in to the story. It saddens me that she has left this world. She will be missed.
Since they first met it hadn't been easy for Bethany Church, an angel, and Xavier Woods, a mortal. Despite the warnings from others, Beth and Xavier's love couldn't be denied. Making a brave decision to marry, crossing the line and doing what no others have done, a group of angels, the Seven, were determined to make them pay for their actions.

It all started with my daughter wanting to purchase, HALO. I have to admit the cover was intriguing, along with the synopsis. She read and loved it. Next it was my turn. I fell in love with the characters and the storyline. We waited impatiently for the next to come out, HADES, and finally, HEAVEN.

If I had to pick my favorite between the three, I guess I'd have to say it's HADES, though the last half of HEAVEN is a close second (You can read my review for HALO and HADES on Amazon.). Overall I loved the trilogy. ALEXANDRA ADORNETTO is an amazing writer with a creative mind that produced an amazing storyline with three dimensional characters.

The first half of HEAVEN was a tad slow, but once you reach the middle it takes off. The slow pace was tolerable due to the wonderful writing. Having read the first two books in the trilogy, there was no way I wasn't finishing the third one.

I loved the surprises and twists HEAVEN took. I hadn't a clue how Xavier and Bethany's story would unfold, but I loved how MS. ADORNETTO played it out. I could never have imagined what the author would do with one of the other characters I love, Gabriel. I'm anticipating with excitement a story about Gabe and Molly.

Heaven Halo Trilogy Alexandra Adornetto Books Reviews

Though not my favorite angel romance series, I definitely did enjoy it. This book has Bethany and Xander hiding out in the open as brother and sister which, of course, hinders their romance for a while. I was pleased with the happy ending though and thought it was a nice conclusion to the series.
I honestly love this book and they are one of my favourite series, but i just have a few queries... (Spoiler!)
When Molly and Beth and Xavier are out having some coffee, Wade comes in and tries to take Molly to "Bible Study" But he speaks to Beth and Xavier as Beth and Xavier when they were supposed to be Ford and Laurie, brother and sister.. So im not sure if that was a mistake and if it was not, then how did Wade know about them? And I think in the end there could have been a few more chapters with Beth and Xavier because when she returns theres only one?! And Ivy and Gabriel arent even there yet! How is she supposed to talk to them or see if they still accept her? I mean of course they do, but thats besides the point. Otherwise i loved this book and i think their should be a fourth one carrying on with B and X lives.
While I enjoyed Heaven, (I enjoyed all the books) i felt that the ending to it was a massive let down. Too much was left unsaid! I really think that this book could have done with an epilogue, to answer all those questions about what happened while Bethany was away, has Gabriel healed, what about him and Molly? What about Xavier? The author brought out a massive bombshell about two thirds of the way into the book and that was it, no more was said about it? I would also love to know what happens in the future, do Gabriel and Ivy go back to Heaven or do they stay with Xavier and Beth, do Xavier and Bethany get a happy ending?! There are so many unanswered questions, so, while I found it an enjoyable read, I was left a bit unsatisfied by the ending...
This was purchased for my daughter, she was looking for this specific title but in hardcover to complete the series and it is exactly what she received. No dings or torn pages, this book was in perfect condition; not only that but she mentioned it being a first edition =)
Beth and Xavier give new meaning to good vs evil vs good. The ups and downs they face to be together. With help from the most unlikely places they will face their fate as one.
I'll have to admit... the beginning of this book is very slow. I read the rest of the trilogy and was a little disappointed in the beginning of book three because it felt a little like the first book. But as soon as it picks up... you can't put it down! The middle and end of the story left you flipping pages quickly as you flew through the riveting story. I only wished it continued on a little longer.

Oh... and a note to the author.... I'd love to read a side story about what happens to Ivy & Gabriel ... or a back story on Raphael.
HOLY HADES AND HEAVEN! This conclusion to the Halo Series had me crying and laughing and screaming more times than I care to admit. What do you do when you love someone so much you are willing to sacrifice it all? Would defy Heaven and Earth to get what you want? What happens to the heart when you know deep down that you were meant for that person? These are the questions I kept asking myself when I was reading about Beth and Xavier.

Heaven starts where Hades has ended and Bethany and Xavier are more in love than ever. They will fight Heaven and Earth to be together. They make the ultimate sacrifice and marry. Things only get worse from there because they were not supposed to marry. Bethany and Angel and Xavier a Human are supposed to be friends not have a relationship and marry each other. But love is unpredictable and love knows no boundaries so they decide to become one.

Being married though is hard and Bethany and Xavier find that trouble is lurking close and The Sevens are rogue angels hell bent on destroying Bethany and her family. The Seven want to darken Heaven and infest it with evil. In order for Bethany to save her family she and Xavier will go into hiding and devise a plan. Once the plan is set and in motion they will fight to the death for what they believe in. Will Bethany have to go home to Heaven without Xavier for good? Will Gabriel and Ivy be hurt? What would you do for love? What would you sacrifice? Come along for the greatest ending to an EPIC series!

The Last Gods of Indochine Samuel Ferrer 9789881219886 Books

Great writing, and an interesting use of historical fiction with two separate but ultimately connected storylines from the past. The first story is set in the 13th Century reign of the Khmer King Jayavarman VIII and the second between the 1860s and1920s. This is a well written quality read. I found every chapter to be entertaining in of itself and so maintaining a strong desire to read on. I would have liked an ending with a few less swirling dreams and rather more ‘facts’. Most of the characters names are borrowed from history but precious little that is actually known about them. With such a thin veneer of known history perhaps the ending had to be mysterious and ephemeral, leaving a host of possible paths along with the unsubstantiated assertion that science and not religions’ unprovable possibilities dictates our fate.
I am critical of historical fiction that use long dead names but so little of the admittedly thin history. I can forgive such a high degree of storytelling in the ancient plot, but the use of real people from modern history with the employment of so little factual information about them is hard to accept. Nevertheless, I can’t imagine that many living relatives will find much to question. Ferrer avoids deformation of character and we are already a century away from their variously esteemed lives. The broad-brush strokes all feel to accurately reflect the periods, and magic aside, are very believable. Perhaps I am allowing my love of history to make me over critical of this historical fiction, and certainly many reviews suggest that I am.
Ferrer’s descriptive writing is first class. I can imagine that all his readers entertain the same picture and social interactions almost exactly as I do. I could easily imagine myself to be an observer on the ’passenger’ boat, in the biplane, or climbing the walls of Angkor Wat. I could smell the gangrene, feel the shacking earth, hear the booming shells, recalled in the mind of the volunteer auxiliary nurse, from the front-line hospital wards of WWI. I could feel that I was amongst elephants, monkeys and exotic people in two distinctly woven times in Indochina.
Why does the title use the word Indochine rather than Indochina, when it is written in English? I have no idea. I see no sign of a French language version of this book. And why the last gods, when that certainly isn’t in any way the case? Perhaps, once more my concern is isolated and obtuse.
This is a very enjoyable read, especially for those that like to set their minds on travels through distant times and civilisations. Five stars, where those stupidly uninformative and variably indicative ‘likes’ are required. This book is strong on description that drives it plot rather than plot that needs description between its scaffolding. Good writers can take one anywhere in time, real or imaginary, Ferrer can do that with aplomb.

The Last Gods of Indochine Samuel Ferrer 9789881219886 Books Reviews

Well written and well researched novel that enlightens the history of Indochina. Great first novel by new author!
I love this book! Ferrer ties together three stories from three eras. Each are fascinating, and told in elegant and lively writing. I'm excited about what he will write next.
Full disclosure I first read it when
it was an in- progress manuscript. The finished book is impressive even if it weren't the author's first.
Beautifully written. The vivid details of surroundings were rich and fresh. There were pages to linger and let the sense of place wash over you, and intense passages where I couldn't turn pages fast enough. I expected the story of an actual, physical journey, but the bigger picture of politics and dogma, religion and superstition, karma and faith, are themes I am still chewing on days after finishing the book. An excellent debut from this author.
The historical fiction, The Last Gods of Indochine, was beautifully woven in between two story lines in 1921, Jacquline, the granddaughter of the renowned French explorer, Henri Mouhot who unearthed Angkor Wat, set out a journey to Cambodia following her grandfather's steps; in 13th century Khmer Empire, Paaku, the Lotus Born boy, who believed to be the incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu and possess a magic power, entangled in a power struggle of religion and kingdom. The two seemingly irrelevant story lines intertwined intricately as the story progressed. Jacqueline and Pukka, being six centuries apart, linked to each other by a mystical curse. The story ended with a surprising twist. Intriguing and captivating, it is a real joy to read!
Having not much historical knowledge of this region of the world, The Last Gods of Indochine opened a fascinating new door as I found myself immersed in and engrossed by the mysterious Khmer culture. Transporting me with lucid and vibrant descriptions of a lost time, the writing is tight and eloquent which sets a steady, page-turning pace. I particularly liked the author's illustrative passages as they pertain to (the various character's) consciousness in the context of "visions", "sleep", and "death". Character psychology is dynamic and well drawn in tandem with the alternating chapters of story line which deftly culminate for a very satisfying end. Not only a very good novel to escape into, but one which imparts a certain wisdom of humanity, as "past" contrasts with "modern".

Four Great Tragedies Hamlet Othello King Lear Macbeth Signet Classics William Shakespeare Sylvan Barnet Alvin Kernan Russel Fraser 9780451527295 Books

Four tragedies written by William Shakespeare are provided in this quite portable book. Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth all share the pages and are edited by four different people, one for each play. Because of this, the editing techniques, footnotes, and connotations tend to be different from play to play and it isn't recommended to sit down and try to read all four in one go. In particular, the editor for King Lear is very heavy handed in his edits and suggestions of meanings. Regardless, that's really the only poor quality of the book.

I, personally, really enjoy this book and the plays chosen. They are all similar in that they sport a common, tragic trait where human paranoia, fear, and deception of the self and from others forces powerful people to destroy not only themselves but those around them. It's a great viewing of the human soul and the chaos that can abound within if unchecked.

Below are a brief synopsis for each play of the story that are really simplistic, but may help someone who is not used to or confident in reading barebones Shakespeare without translation.

I like to say that Hamlet is the story of The Lion King to make it easier for readers to understand. An evil uncle usurps and kills the King, father to Hamlet, and Hamlet must come to terms with his mother's marrying of his uncle and avenge his slain father. However, unlike Disney, his hate and rage overtakes Hamlet, leaving him alone and unmanageable.

Othello is interesting in that it focuses on racial connotations rather often, making it a great play to discuss from this perspective. Othello is a wonderfully brilliant Moorish soldier who will come to doubt all he holds dear due to an equally brilliant, conniving villain named Iago. No Disney references here, Iago makes himself akin to the Devil and works just as craftily in order to succeed.

King Lear, perhaps my least favorite play, still has a great deal of merit. Old and outdated, King Lear wishes to divvy out his holdings to his three daughters, two of which are already married and also viciously desirous of power while the third is quite chaste and humble. Clouded by a simple mistake and love for his daughters, he shirks his third daughter while simultaneously giving all his power to the first two who work to strip Lear of his power.

Finally, Macbeth, has the most supernatural forces at work of the four plays with the famous witches that force Macbeth to distance himself from all his allies and destroy himself. However, even without the witches, the play could run its course without the supernatural as Macbeth is guided by many regular individuals in the text to destruction based on a hope that he will come into great power.
What else could you expect!

There isn't much to say...its exactly what you should expect when ordering Shakespeare...seriously.
This had great shipping. It's a very nice book and it's very clean. Thank you so much for this book!
I ordered this book for my AP English class, and I love that it has all four of my favorite Shakespeares together. I like the typeface, the footnotes, everything. It's small enough to carry around in your purse. I recommend it for the pleasure-reader, student, or teacher. It's a great value, too.
A good collection, suitable for classwork. Translation in-line with most available.
Four of my favorite plays by Shakespeare, all wrapped into one book. I had to buy this for class and, while it offers no extended notes/analysis, it has some very helpful annotations.
Obviously, these are four of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies and well repay the time and efffort to become familiar with them. The volume itself is inexpensive, nicely sized, readable, reasonably durable, with more than ample footnotes (at the bottom of the page of text) to help the reader navigate some of the more obscure or difficult passages (though I found instances in which I thought the footnotes didn't do the text justice, and a better and less distracting format, albeit resulting in a larger text and more expensive edition, is to have the notes on the page facing the text). The introductory "essay" admittedly doesn't aim too high--what can you say in just a few pages? The bibliography is nicely organized and not bad as a starting point.
All in all, if you are looking for an edition to teach, or travel with, or read as a starting point, especially if you want something inexpensive that nonetheless gives you all you really need, this is a very nice edition. A reader who is already familiar with the plays and looking for a bit more by way of history, commentary, criticism, etc., would do better to seek out the Norton or Arden editions, or go to a collection like the Riverside Shakespeare, all of which offer a great deal more supplemental material.
Ridiculous to ask one to describe the plots of Shakespeare's tragedies as "predictable" "some twists" "Full of surprises". It's Shakespeare, for all love. We don't read them because we want to know how they END.
Decent version, reasonable selection of plays -- again, it's Shakespeare. You can't really go wrong.

It's an amazing concept and storyline with a lot of promise but the character interaction and development is really lacking. This is the second book of Mr. Dobson's that I've read and he is really creative with his stories. The character interactions though sound like 12 year old kids talking to each other. Critical story points are solved by key leaders asking "what do you want me to do? ok i'll go do that," rather than genuine conversations, actions, or leadership. Overly simplistic. Again, great story ideas, just poor character development. I didn't struggle with the introduction of new characters as others have stated. There is needless introduction and development of characters that are only part of 3 page scenarios. Instead of stating the guard led our hero down the hall for example, it would instead read guard Ben Dobson who has been part of the prison chain gang since he was 12 during the kings reign, seemed to have forgotten his morning eggs which princess buttercup diligently collected on their behalf knowing his diet required gluton free, free range swampnuts. He had a slight limp as he walked our hero to his cage because of a duck scratch under his right thumb, acquired from a kickball game at age 17....and then we never see this character again...

The Swampling King The Windwalker Legacy Book 1 eBook Ben S Dobson Reviews

I read another book of his (The flaw in magic) and wanted to read more because of the good writtng. I don't know what happened but this book is of a much lower quality. I only made it a third of the way though and had to stop. I was flicking though so much filler dialog to get to the story that I lost interrest. I tried to pretend the characters motivations were valid but after adding more illogical characters I quit. It's like he forgot the story and started anew every once in awhile and added characters to try and make in better and failed. One review said i t gets better later on in the story, I couldn't make it that far. Don't judge the author by this book.
This book kept my attention and was a good page turner, but it was really, really, really long. The main characters (Zerill and Josen) are well done and very deep, but I could have used a bit more back story on both. The world building was pretty imaginative, but there are a lot of missing holes (where did Zerill's people come from? Why are they so different in appearance to Josen's people?). There is some history about powerful Windwalker ancestors but it would have been nice to have more background on them too. The last Windwalker has arrived...and he is a bit anticlimatic too. He is a boy and he doesn't do too much impressive in the novel other than talk to birds. Hopefully he will develop some powers in a future book. At the end of the novel Josen is indeed on his way to become Swamping King but he spends a lot of the book not being much of a leader. Perhaps that was part of the point, but he does seem at times a bit undeserving of his destiny. The best leader in the book turns out to be the main villain of the story. Overall, the story is fairly good but I can't make much judgement on the overall series without reading more books to see where this going to go.

NOTE I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
The story immersed me from start to finish. It had some expected turns as well as some unexpected turns. I liked that there was dual heroines and I appreciated the theme of overcoming prejudices. The Swapling King had goes without being gory, it had thrills and action scenes and good character development. It was a story that was easy to follow and I cheered for the main character from beginning to end. I fully recommend it.
I could not put this book down. Exceptional character development and an amazing world that is easy to get immersed in. Can hardly wait for the next entry in this series. Definitely a fan for life.
Good book! Flow was smooth. Ending makes you want to read more. I will definitely be getting sequel. That's it.
Great read. It could almost be compared to game of thrones. Really enjoyed reading. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys intrique and bravery
The first time I've been so sucked in to a book since I discovered Brandon Sanderson. Complex plot and characters. They actually have depth!!! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy epic with well thought out characters. I can't wait for the next book.
